Tonga baskets are traditionally woven by Tonga woman of the Southern province of Zambia are hand woven using the under and over style of weaving. Each basket which takes up to 3 days to complete is finished with a distinctive coiled rimed herringbone pattern. The beauty in these baskets is that they each have their own unique design and adding to their uniqueness is their unconventional not so perfect roundness in shape. Each basket has a distinctive square bottomed design forming the base. The baskets are made from a selection of natural and locally harvested materials such as wild grasses and palm leaves which are dyed from the bark of a tree.
